INSTRUCTOR: Transitive and intransitive verbs, transitive verbs, verbs that must be followed by a direct object. Intransitive verbs, verbs that do not need to be followed by a direct object. So what is a Direct Object? A DO is a noun or pronoun that receives the action. The following sentence has a subject, a verb, and a direct object. I bought a book. Book receives the action. It is the DO. The DO answers the question who or what received the action of the verb. I ate an apple. What did I eat? An Apple. Apple is the DO. If the transitive verb is not followed by an object, it will sound strange. Example number one, I love. What or who do you love? I love tennis. I love books. I love you. Example number two, she is wearing. What is she wearing? She is wearing a suit to work. Jenny is wearing a t-shirt today. He's wearing pajamas. Example number three, Julie sells in her store. What does she sell? Julie sells canned goods in her store. More examples of transitive verbs, address, borrow, bring, discuss, give, lend. Now, let's look at intransitive verbs. Remember, intransitive verbs do not need a DO to receive the action. We arrived. He lied. I cried. The sun rose at 5:24. At 5:24 answers when. It does not answer who or what, so it is not a DO. Example number two, Mary is sleeping on the couch. On the couch answers where she sleeps. It does not answer who or what. So it is not a DO. Example number three, your dog barks a lot. A lot answers the question how often. It does not answer who or what. So it is not a DO. More examples of intransitive verbs, die, live, rain, smile, stand, wait.
