[MUSIC PLAYING] - Hi, everybody. Welcome to Tutor Tip Tuesday. For today, we're going to be focusing on the four types of essays. First we have the argumentative essay, a.k.a. a persuasive essay. This is where you, the writer or the student, you choose a question, and you then choose a stance or a position that you stand for that question, yes or no, typically, and you research that question. Your goal is to convince your reader to choose, or to at least consider the stance that you've taken on that question. So for instance, has the rise of internet had a positive or negative impact on education? You would choose yes or no, research that yes or no position, and you would use quotes, evidence, information to help support where you stand on that question. Second is expository, a.k.a. research essays. This is a little more straightforward than argumentative essays as you simply choose a topic, research that topic, and present that information. You are not trying to convince your reader. You are simply informing your reader on that topic. For example, explain how the invention of the printing press changed European society in the 15th century. That's a pretty crazy topic, but it would be a lot of fun to know more about that. And by reading your essay, I or your reader can learn more. Third is a narrative essay. Very straightforward. You, the writer, are simply telling a story. It can be personal and creative, real or imagined. The basic is that you are telling a story. You can go many different directions when it comes to a narrative essay. Number four is the descriptive essay. Now, it sounds familiar or similar to a narrative essay. Here's the difference. In a narrative, you're telling a story. In a descriptive essay, you are simply using detailed sensory description to help create that image or to help describe a thing, a place, or a person. So it's really much more focused than a narrative essay. So for instance, a narrative essay would be an experience where you learn something about yourself, whereas the descriptive essay would just be a simple description of an object that has sentimental value for you. So the narrative is the whole story. A descriptive essay is much more focused, and you use imagery to really help hone in on that object, person, or place. So those are the four types of essays. There are more, but those are the four most commonly used in US public schools. I hope you guys learned something today. Have a beautiful rest of your day, and I will see you next week. Go out there and learn something. Bye!
